During the week of Super Bowl XXXVII, a consortium
of local government agencies, healthcare providers and technology
providers in Southern California established and executed a community
safety and security plan for emergency medical response and disaster
relief titled the Shadow Bowl. This exercise allowed consortium
members to demonstrate rapid response, on-demand services and expertise
in the aftermath of simulated mass casualty events. Member organizations
focused on testing and optimizing advanced applications in the areas
of environmental monitoring, mitigation and telemedicine.
Wave Three Software participated in the Shadow Bowl exercise as
a full partner and demonstrated the capabilities of its Session
Communication Software. Session provided rich, multimedia communication
and collaboration for Shadow Bowl's telemedicine exercises. Patient
consultation and treatment was performed remotely as catastrophic
events typically over-burden local medical resources. To access
alternative care, local emergency service providers used Session's
Voice over IP and Video over IP functionality to communicate with
remote doctors on call in Colorado, Texas and Alabama. Session allowed
the remote specialists to efficiently perform remote triage on a
large group of patients. After the doctors sorted the simulated
victims by medical priority, they used Session for patient consultation
and diagnosis. ShareApp, Session's integrated application
sharing tool, also facilitated efficient, real-time collaboration
on patient data.
The Shadow Bowl exercises were instrumental in preparing local government
and healthcare providers to plan for and react to mass casualty
events. During Shadow Bowl's telemedicine simulations, Session software
proved to be a robust, immersive communication solution, providing
high quality patient/doctor interaction and enhanced process flow
under extreme network and human conditions.
